Speaker Biography

Cousins and Owners, Melanie Owen and Lauren Kniebes, grew up in the small town of Coloma, Michigan in the heart of the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail. Growing up next to their family's vineyards, they were taught about the art of viticulture and winemaking at an early age. They watched as their Grandmother, Juanita Kniebes, made her homemade wine from Concord grapes grown on the family farm.

Melanie is married to Chef Jason Hayes and they have a 20 year old son Jason Hayes Jr. She has a certification in Hospitality Management from Lake Michigan College and Bachelors Degree in Business and Marketing from Sienna Heights University. Melanie has a professional background in real estate, human resources, banquet facilities manager, flight attendant for Northwest Airlines, and most recently as the tasting room manager of Contessa Wine Cellars.

Lauren has worked in the Michigan wine industry for 9 years.  She discovered her passion for Michigan wine during this time while working at Contessa Wine Cellars in Coloma.  In 2013, she graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sales and Business Marketing.  She worked in human resources in Kalamazoo upon graduating and moved back to Coloma last year to pursue her dream of opening a winery.
