Speaker's Topic

Water Street Glassworks is located in the historic Hinkley Building and opened in January 2004. Visitors can overlook the school’s “hot shop”– the glassblowing and casting studio, from a viewing platform or “catwalk” and see classes in session or experience live glass demonstrations. Water Street Glassworks is also home of Fired UP!, an after-school glass blowing program for Benton Harbor teens.  They were also just awarded the Lake Michigan College Martin Luther King Diversity Award for their work with Fired Up! in the community.  Sarah Hess, Glassworks executive director, will give an informational tour on the facility and its programs.

Speaker’s Biography
Sarah Hess has worked in various fields throughout her professional career. She holds degrees in Business, Fashion Merchandising and Psychology from Baker College and Western Michigan University respectively. Her love of the arts and history has been a lifelong passion that was instilled in her through her mother and grandfather, both amateur artists.  Her hope is to inspire in others, through her career, the same deep appreciation for art, culture and history that she feels. She has worked as an assistant to the Executive Director of the Michigan Maritime Museum and as Interim Director at the South Haven Center for the Arts. While working with the Catanias on a couple exhibits at the SHCA she was invited to visit Water Street Glassworks and she has never really left.
